How Generous is the Law of Attraction to You?

I am intrigued by the law of attraction. Obviously, the more money you have, the more you can give to others. I've been wondering whether it is the attitude of giving, or the getting which comes first. This is one way to look at this. We can decide to focus on what we can do for those around us, or on our own worries. Our decision determines what we will attract into our lives.

Do you know the law of attraction? Do you want to know the secret to a happy life? It is all about getting, giving and forgiving, but not in that order. Let me explain what I mean.

Many religions and philosophies recognize the principle that you get what you give. Consider looking at the law of attraction as the Law of Sowing and Reaping. “If you plant only a little amount of seed, you will harvest only a little.” It's our choice!

Many people think that the rich are greedy and selfish. I was listening to my local NPR radio station recently and was struck by the names of the foundations that had donated money to broadcast the radio program. These were all rich people who, through their family or corporation, had set up a foundation to be generous with their money.

Give Before You Can Get

It got me thinking. Which comes first; the attitude of giving, or the getting? Did they only start giving after they had a lot of money, or did they start being generous before they became rich?

I am sure you could find some people to fit into each category. I have read some biographies of wealthy people, though and it seems to me that those who manage to hang on to their money are the ones who already had good habits of generosity in their life. I also think that this principle applies not only to our financial life, but also to the emotional, social and physical realms of life. We can get into the habit of being generous with our money, time, energy, emotions and our forgiveness.

Law of Attraction

The popular way of thinking about this now is known as the law of attraction. When you focus on the good things that you can do for those around you, you start attracting what you want to you. Your focus shifts to all of the wonderful and positive things you want in your life. What you focus on expands, according to the principle of increase. When you are focused on your purpose in life, your life just seems to get better and better, as you achieve your goals. Instead of worrying about what might happen, you celebrate what does happen! You become more energized from it and feel like the weight of the world is lifting off your shoulders. Jesus said to give your burdens to him and his burden is light. Can we trade roles and let someone else be king of the universe, instead of trying to do that job ourselves? Worrying about all of the things that are not our responsibility only drags us down with extra burdens and prevents us from doing what we were meant to do. So, when we realize that we are not responsible for the way the universe unfolds, we don't waste energy on worries and negative thoughts.

Get More So You Can Give More

Try living by the open hand principle. I understand that I am just passing through this world; I don't get to keep any of it. The rich man who dies with the biggest pile of cash may be the winner, but he's still dead. Money is a means to an end, not the goal. Therefore, know your life purpose. Your purpose likely has more to do with the people around you than the stuff around you. I want to be generous with how I spend my time, as well as my money. Something to think about!
